Manchester City ended Chelsea’s brief stint at the top of the table by beating Newcastle United 2-0. The victory lifted them back to the top of the table and now made it 6 wins in a row in the EPL. City took the lead early in the game as Dzeko found the back of the net in the 7th minute. Silva played the ball wide left to Kolarov, he crossed the ball low into the box where the running Dzeko met it first time and buried it past the keeper to give City the lead. City were in control and Newcastle had to find a way to get back into the match. They almost did in the 32nd minute when Tiote and the St James’ Park faithful all were celebrating his goal from distance, only to have it overruled by the referee after he consulted the linesman. On replay there were three United players that were offside, even though they didn’t touch the ball they were judged to have obstructed Joe Hart’s view. 1-0 at half time as the Newcastle fans let their feelings be known. Pardew too let his feelings known to the ref as the two teams entered the tunnel.
Dzeko’s goal would give City the early lead
The players walked out for the second half and it seemed the break didn’t affect how Pardew and the fans felt about the ref’s decision. The fans boos echoed across the stadium as the ref made his way onto the pitch. Meanwhile Pardew was all over the fourth official expressing his feelings about the disallowed goal. The game continued on as Newcastle looked to get themselves back on level terms. The game turned more physical too, Tiote would see the yellow card after a late challenge on Toure. While Sissoko was skating on thin ice after a few late challenges himself. Pellegrini was forced to make a change as he took off the goal scorer Dzeko and brought on Navas. He would also change his formation from 4-4-2 to a 4-5-1 to deal with the pressure applied by the United midfield. Still though Newcastle piled on the pressure and had good spell of possession. Though shots from Cabaye and Tiote would fail to beat the keeper. Then Pellegrini was forced into another change as Toure was substituted for Garcia with what looked to be a lower back injury. Cabaye also was lucky to remain on the pitch after already earning himself a yellow card and then escaped punishment for a very late challenge on Navas. Remy then should have brought the home side level in the 68th minute, but his low driven left footed shot was well saved by the England goal keeper Hart. Yanga-Mbiwa then would make a horrible challenge on Nasri and was very lucky to only get a yellow card. Nasri had to stretchered off and Milner was brought in for City’s final substitution. In a final roll of the dice Pardew would bring on Ben Arfa to try and salvage a point from the game but Negredo would secure the points for City with a 95th minute goal, in what was a very physical affair.
Negredo would help City back to the top of the table scoring deep in injury time
